A few blocks north of Central Square, the Central Square location at 166 Prospect Street is in the heart of the Port neighborhood. Our main office and a preschool classroom are tucked below the Cambridge Music Consortium at the intersection of Broadway and Prospect Street. The space also features an indoor gross motor play area for inclement weather.
Hi, I’m Mercedes Smith-Sullivan and I’ve been in the world of early childhood education for almost 15 years. My career started as a nanny, where I got a front-row seat to the early years that truly shape a child’s life. That experience sparked a passion that brought me into the preschool classroom as an assistant teacher. From there, I worked my way up becoming a lead teacher, and now, stepping proudly into my role as Director. Every step of this journey has deepened my belief in the power of early learning. I see education as more than just teaching ABCs it’s about nurturing whole humans. I believe children deserve spaces where they feel safe, seen, curious, and celebrated. My approach is rooted in creativity, empathy, structure, and joy. I’m big on collaboration, supporting my team, and always looking for ways to innovate and elevate the learning experience.
Outside the classroom, I’m a curious soul who lives for creativity and connection. I love traveling, moving my body (hiking, dancing, gym time—you name it), catching live music, and getting inspired by new places and people. I’m also a passionate foodie—if I’m not cooking something new, I’m probably out discovering a hidden gem restaurant or daydreaming about my next meal. I also deeply love photography, film, and the arts; anything expressive and beautiful has my heart. To me, working with children is sacred. It’s the most important work there is. I consider it an honor to guide and support not just the little ones, but the incredible educators and families alongside them. I truly believe learning never stops and I’m here to keep growing, leading, and creating magic wherever possible.
I look forward to embarking on this new journey and meet all of you and your little ones.
See you all soon,
Mercedes Smith-Sullivan
My name is Wilgens Metelus, and I’m from Haiti. As the oldest son, I moved to the United States at the age of 13. I attended school in Cambridge, MA, and later pursued art school. Although I didn’t graduate, I’m actively seeking ways to enhance my education, such as taking online courses to advance my career.
I chose this profession because I wanted to better understand parenting, and my experiences have shaped my approach. I love this work so much that I turned it into a career. I am passionate about my job and enjoy watching the children grow into their unique personalities.
In my free time, I enjoy playing soccer, watching action and comedy movies or shows, and spending quality time with my kids.
